March Small Business of the Month: Bliss Salon & Spa
What do you do if your employer is closing the business? Open your own. That’s what cosmetologists Bethany and Aaron Tyrrell decided in 2005.
“We needed somewhere to work, so we created a place,” Bethany Tyrrell says of opening Bliss Salon & Spa at 3730 Rome Drive, www.bliss-salonspa.com, 765/807-0343.
High-energy Salon, Relaxing Spa
What they created is much more than a business—it’s a place where they tailor customer service to their high standards and provide a high-energy salon on one level and a very relaxing spa on the other level, Tyrrell says.
Drawing on the definition of “bliss”—“extreme happiness or spiritual joy,” the Tyrrell’s embraced that as the foundation of their business. “We strive to incorporate bliss into each guest reservation,” she says.
The business provides hair, skin and nail care and massage. Services include facials, eye treatments, waxing, hot rock massage, expectant-mother massage, a de-stress aromatherapy cocoon, the energize body wrap, a seven-hour “day of bliss” and more.
Award-winning Business
Besides winning a loyal customer base and word-of-mouth referrals, the business landed a top professional award in 2011—second place in product supplier Prive’s national contest. The prize included a trip to Mexico and education by Prive’s artistic director at Bliss.
This month, it wins the Greater Lafayette Commerce Small Business of the Month Award.
Business Enjoys Repeat Business, Referrals
Bliss Salon and Spa employs 14—seven stylists, a licensed massage therapist, two aestheticians, a salon manager, salon coordinator and two receptionists. “Every one of our service providers is phenomenal,” Tyrrell says. “I couldn’t ask for a better staff.”
“Business has been very consistent,” she says. “Customer loyalty is the biggest thing. We’re very thankful for the community support we’ve received and for the priority our clients put on self-care.”
Sharing its bounty with the community is also a hallmark of the business. Some of its benefactors include American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, the MDA Lock Up and others.
Lafayette Natives
The Tyrrells are both Lafayette natives and graduates of McCutcheon High School. Bethany began her studies at Lafayette Beauty Academy while in high school.
“I tried it and love it,” she says of her career choice.
Aaron continued in cosmetology for a while after opening the business and still owns it with his wife, but he now works in an auto body shop.
Outside the business, Bethany enjoys running and Aaron, working out.
“We do love to travel,” she says, “but not lately, since we opened Bliss and had a baby.” Their daughter Acelinn is three, and their family also includes Tank, a yellow lab.
Open Six Days a Week
Bliss Salon and Spa hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
